Participants who came from all across Canada, the United States, and even France, leaved enriched with a multitude of tips and tricks to pass on to their own league.

All about MTLRD Training Camp!

16 Feb
February 17-18-19 will be MTLRD’s first training camp, hosted by the New Skids on the Block. It is with great pleasure that we announce that all the trainee spots were sold out in advance to skaters from Ontario, New England, Quebec and the Maritimes.

The week-end will start on a high note at the registration session at Taz, Friday night. At 8pm, the New Skids will take on long time rivals the Boston Massacre. The teams have met four times in the past, and the Skids have only won one of those match ups. However, the last one was a year ago and the Skids took it, on top of some serious personnel changes for the opponents, the Montreal skaters stand an excellent chance. Tickets are still available for the Friday night bout, it is open to all. Check out our calendar page for on-line purchases (till Friday at noon) or at the door from 6pm30. See you then, fans and skaters!!

For the training camp’s participants, the nitty gritty begins on Saturday morning still at Taz, bright and early. There will be two tracks. One dedicated to jamming and skating, the other to blocking. The Skids’ jammer roster will share their secret moves with the jammer-trainees. You know, jamming, someone’s gotta do it, says Georgia W Tush, and you may also “get your Francey Pants on”, as you improve your stride and speed (Apocalipstick is hot at that too). You may also wanna work on assisting your jammer with Jess Bandit, Lil Mama and Smack Daddy, your star bearer will be eternally grateful. Power jams and penalty kills with The Rev will round up the track 1 menu.

The Blocker track will see The Rev teaching about hitting (no kidding!), Bone Machine will cover booty blocking and bridging, as well as pack starts with Lil Mama, Jess Bandit and Smack Daddy. It should also be mentioned that the referee clinic will take to the track once a day, the rest of their training being theoretical.

We will also feature some off-skates clinics in the “Nook”, which you will find, are essential to successful derby. Core training, stretching, injury prevention for you to train to play derby and not play derby to train (Smack Daddy 2012), you will even get a take-home training program, thanks to Smack Daddy, Beater Pan-Tease, as well as special guests Katie and Lisa-Marie. There is also a gear workshop with the Neon Skates crew, “How to run an efficient bench” with The Rev and Charlotte Bruise-a-lot, league logistics with Georgia W Tush, and Smack Daddy will set you up on game preparation and visualization. The Skids will also share some strategies (how exciting!) and some very special words of wisdom in “Don’t be a douchbag”.

As you can see training camp’s participants, get your beauty rest now, because it will be a very busy week-end!

We should also thank our friends and sponsors, Neon Skates and Royal Phoenix, as well as the folks from Riedell who will be with us all week-end.
